A foreign bank has extended its hand in support of the dabbawalas of Mumbai, who are facing financial crisis due to Corona crisis. Foreign bank, HSBC has announced a grant of Rs 15 crore to support the dabbawalas of the country’s financial capital Mumbai. These people, who supply food boxes at home, office, have been sitting empty since the beginning of the epidemic in March 2020. Most of the office going people are working at home. This has adversely affected the livelihood of the dabbawalas.
Dabbawalas have been commonly seen on local trains, crowded commercial establishments and residential areas of the city, the statement said. Dabbawalas will get food security, life insurance, education assistance for their families and livelihood support in the form of a new cycle after the lockdown is lifted under this assistance from the bank.
Dabbawala delivers tiffin from home to office
Dabbawalas have a very complex network of tiffin deliverers. These people pick up the tiffin from a job worker’s house, hand it over to another person via suburban trains, and finally the tiffin is delivered to the person concerned via bicycle.
This network was featured in the film ‘The Lunchbox’. After the lunch is over in the afternoon, these tiffins are picked back up and reach back to their homes in their homes.
Dabbawalas badly affected by the pandemic
Hitendra Dave, the interim chief executive officer of the bank in India, said that these dabbawalas are an integral part of the working people of the metropolis who have been badly affected by the pandemic and their livelihood is in crisis. The bank is working with the NGO United Way Mumbai to reach out to and help the dabbawalas. He expressed hope that this financial assistance will help the dabbawalas to tide over the adversity during these challenging times.
Dabbawala serves 2 lakh people daily
The HSBC statement said that Dabbawalas have been serving 2 lakh people daily. But due to the pandemic, all his work came to a standstill. Due to the epidemic, most people have started working from home, this has also affected their livelihood badly.
