Scientists have outlined a controversial plan to refreeze the North and South Poles, and dial down the worldwide thermostat.
They say high-flying jets may spray microscopic aerosol particles into the ambiance to replicate daylight and funky the melting icecaps.
Around 175,000 flights a 12 months can be wanted, releasing tens of millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide.
But a former UK chief scientist backed the plans, telling Sky News that polar warming is now essential – and refreezing the ice may maintain again the rise in international sea ranges.
The new examine was led by Wake Smith from Yale University within the United States.
He warned the plan would deal with an necessary symptom of local weather change, not the trigger.
“It’s aspirin, not penicillin. It’s not a substitute for decarbonisation,” he stated.
Under the plan, a fleet of 125 army air-to-air refuelling tankers would launch a cloud of microscopic sulphur dioxide particles at an altitude of 43,000ft (13km) and latitude of 60 levels in each hemispheres, roughly equal to the Shetland Islands within the north, and the Falklands within the south.
The particles would slowly drift in direction of the poles on high-altitude winds, barely shading the Earth’s floor beneath.
Just over 13m tonnes of particles launched within the spring and summer season can be sufficient to chill the polar areas by 2C, with extra reasonable cooling at mid-latitudes, based on the analysis revealed within the scientific journal Environmental Research Communications.
The plan is controversial, not least as a result of the massive variety of flights – equal to greater than two days of world air visitors in 2021 – would launch greenhouse gases into the higher ambiance the place they’re extra damaging.
Other scientists are additionally cautious about unleashing photo voltaic shading as a result of it may have unintended penalties, similar to decreasing crop yields.
A plan to launch particles from a balloon in northern Sweden final 12 months was deserted after protests from environmentalists. A big-scale launch programme would wish worldwide settlement.

But the researchers argue only one% of the human inhabitants lives within the goal deployment zone. And the £10bn a 12 months value of the programme can be far lower than carbon seize or different technique of mitigating or adapting to local weather change, they add.
“If the risk-benefit equation were to pay off anywhere, it would be at the poles,” stated Mr Smith.
“Any intentional turning of the global thermostat would be of common interest to all of humanity.”
The poles are warming a number of instances quicker than the worldwide common, with record-breaking heatwaves reported in each the Arctic and the Antarctic earlier this 12 months.
If the huge Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets attain a tipping level – now seen as doubtless on present projections of world warming – then sea ranges would rise by a number of metres.
