Social Media Rules: The central government is ready to introduce stricter rules than before to make social media companies accountable and ensure the safety of citizens on the internet. Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, while giving information about this in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, appealed for the cooperation of the opposition party to bring strict rules on social media.
Ashwini Vaishnav said in Rajya Sabha that there is a need to make social media more accountable and stricter rules can be brought if there is a political consensus on the subject. Vaishnav made the remarks in reply to supplementary questions during Question Hour in the Upper House. He said that whenever the government took any step to make social media accountable, the opposition alleged that the government was trying to curb the freedom of expression. He said but it is not so.
Responding to a question about action taken against websites like ‘Bully Bai’ targeting Muslim women, he said the government took immediate action as soon as the matter came to its notice. We have to strike a balance and consensus to make social media accountable to ensure the safety of our women and future generations, she said. He said that the rules of social media have to be strengthened and if the opposition accuses the government of curbing freedom of expression, then it is wrong.

In response to a question by Congress member Anand Sharma, the Union Minister said that if there is a consensus in the House, then we are ready to make strict rules for social media. I personally believe that for the safety of our citizens, we should make the rules more strict. He said that he agreed that we as a society have to come forward and make social media more accountable.
Vaishnav said that a framework has been put in place for any cyber crime happening across the country and the same can be reported on the central portal and it goes to the concerned law enforcement agency. According to PTI, on the action taken against a website like ‘Bulli Bai’, Vaishnav said that it is a very sensitive matter. There can be no compromise with the dignity of women. This is our commitment and it has nothing to do with any religion or region.
He said that the government has initiated immediate action in this matter and this action is not only on the surface but the IT Ministry has gone to the root. The central said that social media is very popular and it has a lot of importance in our life and to avoid misuse of social media and to make social media safe and accountable, the government had issued comprehensive guidelines in 2021.
