On the other hand, US and Turkish troops have been deployed in parts of the north and east of the country. Earlier in October, two bombs placed on a bus carrying Syrian soldiers had exploded in Damascus, killing 14. It was one of the deadliest bombings in the capital years later. A little known group then claimed responsibility for the attack. Attacks in Damascus have decreased in recent years.
The last major blast occurred in 2017, when suicide bombers targeted a judicial office building and a restaurant. About 60 people were killed in the attack and the Islamic State group militants claimed responsibility. This extremist group has not been able to occupy Syrian territory since the year 2019, but it remains a constant threat through its sleeper cells. Most of the ISIS fighters are hiding in the vast desert of Syria. Since the beginning of the conflict in Syria in March 2011, nearly half a million people have been killed. Syria had a population of 23 million before the conflict, half of which has been displaced and a large part of the country has been destroyed.
