Sources related to the government have given information about this. This fighting started after renewed attacks by Houthi Rebels. This pro-Iranian group has intensified its efforts to capture Marib. Which is the last stronghold of the government in the northern part of the country. From February onwards, the conflict became even more intense. In which hundreds of people have died on both sides.
29 government-backed officials have been killed in fighting between Thursday and Sunday, while at least 82 fighters have been killed (Yemen War Today). Three sources related to the government have given this information to the news agency AFP. However, no confirmation has yet been made by the rebel group regarding the death toll. A Yemen government official said earlier on Thursday that the Houthis had intensified attacks from the northern, southern and western parts of the country.
What will be the loss from the capture of Marib?
The official said that despite all efforts, the rebels were not able to damage government positions as they were air-secured by a Saudi-led military alliance (Yemen War With Saudi Arabia). A government military official said, “Fearless fighting is being witnessed in these areas. There is shelling from both sides and coalition air strikes are also going on. If the Houthis capture the oil-rich Marib region, it will further increase the strength of this rebel group. Due to the ongoing fighting in this country, a humanitarian crisis has also arisen here. Local people have had to leave their homes and take refuge in other countries.
Conflict continues in Yemen since 2014
The conflict in Yemen began in 2014 when Houthi rebels took control of the capital, Sanaa. After which the Saudi coalition had to intervene to help the government (Yemen War Explained).
