The breakout has raised questions on alleged understaffing and overcrowding at HMP Wandsworth, and why Khalife was being held on the much less safe Category B facility when most terror suspects are held in HMP Belmarsh, a Category A jail.
Mr Chalk was not capable of present a determine when requested repeatedly what number of terror suspects are in Category B prisons slightly than Category A.
However he stated: “What I can say in respect of Wandsworth… I wanted to ensure out of an abundance of caution that every resource is put into that prison and security is preserved, some prisoners there on remand have been moved.”
He stated the transfers occurred this week, including: “Additional resources have gone into Wandsworth, out of an abundance of caution around 40 prisoners have been moved.”
Pressed once more on what number of terror suspects are being held at Catergory B prisons, he admitted he has “concerns” about this situation and he has ordered an investigation into the matter, however there are “complexities”.
Mr Chalk added that protocols at Wandsworth had been in place however it isn’t clear in the event that they had been being adopted, and that’s one thing a overview into the breakout will look into.
