Sherman will meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and others on Sunday in the northeastern city of Tianjin as part of her current Asia tour, from where she will also travel to Japan, South Korea and Mongolia.
Sherman will be the highest-ranking US official to visit China since US President Joe Biden took office in January. However, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met Wang and veteran Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi in Anchorage, Alaska in March. Earlier in April, Biden administration climate envoy John Kerry went to Shanghai for a meeting with his Chinese counterpart.
US-China relations are at the lowest level
Sherman’s visit to China follows a significant deterioration in already badly affected US-China relations over the past two weeks. Along with the diplomatic tension between the US and China, the India-China dispute can also be discussed in the meeting.
