Baltimore: In a last-ditch effort to save the patient’s life, American doctors transplanted a pig’s heart into it, a first in the medical world. A hospital in Maryland said on Monday that the patient was still in good health three days after the highly experimental operation. While it is too early to say anything about the success of the operation, it is a step in the direction of decades-old research into the use of animal parts in life-saving transplants.
Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center said the transplant showed that the animal’s heart with the genetic variation could function in the human body without showing signs of immediate rejection. The son of patient David Bennett (57) told ‘The Associated Press’ (AP) that David knew the experiment was no guarantee of success, but that he was dying, seeking a human heart transplant. were not eligible and had no other option.

According to a statement provided by the University of Maryland Medical Center, a day before the operation, Bennett said, “It was a do-or-die situation for me. I want to live I know it’s like shooting an arrow in the dark, but that’s the last option I have.” Bennett was able to breathe on his own on Monday, but he is still using heart and lung machines.
The next few days will be crucial in terms of his health. “If this operation is successful, there will be an endless supply of these organs for patients who are suffering,” said Dr. Mohamed Mohiuddin, scientific director of the University of Maryland’s animal-to-human transplant program. Previous attempts at such transplants have failed, mainly because human bodies refuse to accept animal parts. (agency)
