There is a place in the world, which is called ‘Gates of Hell’ i.e. ‘Door to Hell’. This place is located in the north of Turkmenistan, which was previously included in the Soviet Union. A large part of Turkmenistan is desert, whose name is Karakum. The Karakum Desert is spread over 3.5 lakh square kilometers. To its north there is a huge pit, which is called ‘Door of Hell’.
Talking to the BBC, Canadian explorer George Koronis said that when I first saw this place and stepped here, the hot air hit my face directly. I felt as if the devil himself had come out of this pit with a weapon in his hands. According to the BBC report, the width of this pit is 69 meters and the depth is 30 meters. For many decades, this fire-filled crater has been burning like this, the reason behind which is the methane gas coming out of it.
Scientists claim to have started fire
George Koronis was a member of the National Geographic Channel team that reached near this crater in Turkmenistan in 2013. The team went to find out how long this fire has been burning. There is a very popular story behind this, according to which in 1971 the geologists of the Soviet Union were searching for the reserves of crude oil in this desert.
Scientists found reserves of natural gases at one place. During the search, the ground sank down and three big pits were formed. It is said that scientists were afraid of the methane coming out of these pits to dissolve in the environment, so they set them on fire so that in a few weeks the methane would end and the fire would be extinguished. However, no documents are available to corroborate this story.
no information available
George told that till 2013 the local people did not know about this pit, so it is not possible to gather more information about this pit. He said that no official report and documents were found about it. Although this incident was mentioned in the newspapers but no concrete information was found.
He said that there are not many controversies behind the fire. Some people say that the fire was deliberately set, while some people consider it an accident. At the same time, some people blame the incident of lightning behind it. The government of Turkmenistan had considered extinguishing this fire, but this fire is promoting tourism in the country. Every year about six thousand tourists come to see it.
