The Taliban have captured a major district in Kandahar province after fierce fighting with government forces in Afghanistan. News agencies gave this information on Sunday. Two days after US-allied forces withdrew from Bagram Air Base near Kabul, the militant group captured Panjwai district in the southern province of Kandahar.
Given its proximity to Kandahar, Panjwai district has long been a target of the Taliban. “The Taliban have seized the district police headquarters and the governor’s office building,” Panjwai district governor Hasti Mohammad told AFP news agency. Taliban insurgents have launched massive moves across the country and captured dozens of districts after US troops returned to their home countries following President Joe Biden’s announcement in April.
100 districts under the control of Taliban
The final phase of the withdrawal of US forces has given impetus to the campaign to capture rural areas of Afghanistan. The head of the Kandahar provincial council has accused government forces of “deliberate retreat” following the Taliban’s capture of Panjwai, weakened by the withdrawal of US troops. The Taliban has now taken control of 100 of all 421 districts in Afghanistan. Panjwai is the fifth district in Kandahar that has been captured by the Taliban in recent weeks.
Afghan army flees Tajikistan
There have also been reports of Afghan forces fleeing the northern border into Tajikistan. Tajikistan’s State Committee for National Security said in a statement that more than 300 Afghan government troops crossed the border at around 6:30 p.m. local time on Saturday. Tajik officials said they were allowed to enter the country because they were “inspired by the principles of humanism and good neighbourhood”.
Taliban capture army weapons
According to an investigation report by The Sun, in June, the Taliban captured 700 trucks, Humvees, dozens of armored vehicles and artillery from Afghan security forces. The report said that some pictures posted on social media were investigated. This means that the vast amount of military equipment donated or sold to Afghanistan to help fight the Taliban is going to the terrorist organization itself.
