The Delta variant of COVID-19 is wreaking havoc in Indonesia. Due to the delta variant, there is an increase in corona cases in the country. At the same time, the country is facing a double whammy of the slow pace of vaccination along with a tremendous increase in the cases of corona. After the slow start of vaccination, now the country is struggling to get more and more people to get the vaccine (Coronavirus Vaccine).
Due to the explosion in the cases of COVID-19, the pressure on the health system of the country has increased a lot. But insufficient global supplies, the complex geography of the world’s largest archipelago nation, and hesitation to vaccinate some Indonesian citizens are the biggest barriers to vaccination. The number of patients in the hospital has exceeded their limit due to the arrival of tourists in May during the Eid holiday and the spread of the delta variant of the corona virus found in India for the first time.
Vacant lands are being cleared for burial of the dead
In Indonesia, in the past two weeks, the average seven-day daily cases has increased from 8,655 to 20,690. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this number is also being told less. Its most impact is being seen in Java, the most populous island of Indonesia. In mid-June, hospitals began building temporary intensive care rooms (ICUs) with plastic tents, and patients had to wait several days before being admitted. Oxygen tanks were placed on the pavement.
Away from hospitals, vacant lands are being cleared to bury the dead. Families have to wait to bury their loved ones. Whereas grave diggers have to work long shifts. Last year, Indonesia’s largest Islamic clerical body issued a decree that mass graves, which are generally forbidden in Islam, would be allowed in times of crisis.
Delta variant reaches more than 100 countries
On the other hand, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the world is in a dangerous phase due to the COVID-19 epidemic. The reason behind this is that the Delta variant is available in more than 100 countries. He said that the delta variant, which first appeared in India, is still undergoing changes and mutations and it has emerged as the most dangerous variant of COVID-19 in many countries. At the same time, he told that the epidemic can be controlled through vaccination. In such a situation, all countries should emphasize on increasing the speed of vaccination.
