Rishi Sunak’s flagship coverage to cease Albanian migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats is unlikely to scale back total unlawful immigration due to “infinite” demand, Home Office sources have warned.
The prime minister’s five-point-plan, launched final month, particularly targets folks arriving from Albania after the Eastern European nation accounted for greater than a 3rd of channel arrivals in 2022.
However, a senior supply throughout the Home Office has advised Sky News this won’t considerably cut back migrant crossings.
“Even if you stopped any more Albanians coming across, the boats would still travel”, they stated.
“Their locations on the boats could be crammed by Somalis, Eritreans or Afghans who cannot afford to pay as a lot because the Albanians are paying.
“There is an almost infinite number of people who want to come to the UK.”
Last month, 4 migrants died after the small dinghy they had been travelling in at evening capsized.
Forty-three others had been rescued in an operation involving the RNLI, the UK and French coastguard and the Royal Navy.
An absence of Albanians onboard might have meant the boat was not initially intercepted, as British safety providers are understood to watch Albanian cell phones in Northern France.
Around 33,000 of these arriving in Kent within the first 9 months of 2022 had been from Albania. This amounted to greater than 30% of arrivals, in comparison with simply 3% in 2021.

Responding to the claims made to Sky News, a Home Office insider stated: “No one is saying illegal migrants from Albania is the only issue we face.
“That’s why the prime minister and the house secretary have a plan to deal with unlawful migration throughout the Channel in small boats, regardless of the nationality of these making the journey, and they are going to be bringing ahead new laws to focus on this as quickly as potential.”
