An African huntsman spider has been present in Edinburgh after it stowed away in a traveller’s suitcase.
The adventurous arachnid was found at a property within the metropolis on Sunday after the resident returned from a piece placement in Africa.
The Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) mentioned it was known as to the “unusual rescue” after the traveller managed to seize the spider in a plastic field.
Animal rescue officer Catherine Atterton mentioned: “The spider was very fast, and about 10cm in size.
“Huntsman spiders are recognized for his or her pace and their capability to leap, so I used to be glad the member of the general public had managed to include the spider.”
Huntsman spiders are present in heat and tropical areas together with Australia, Africa and Asia.
They are recognized for his or her pace and might develop a leg span of 25-30cm.
Huntsman spiders use venom to immobilise their prey however aren’t thought-about harmful to people.

Ms Atterton added: “Thankfully the spider was none the worse for wear after their long journey and was taken to one of our animal rescue and rehoming centres to quarantine.
“We’ve been liaising with our contacts and have a house down in Kent lined up with a specialist the place this huntsman can fortunately stay out the remainder of their life.
“We know a lot of people find spiders frightening but to the Scottish SPCA, they’re just another animal who needs our help.”
