The fossilized skeleton of a T rex relative referred to as the Gorgosaurus that roamed the earth 10 million years earlier than its descendent has offered for $6.1million (£5.01m) at public sale.
The large carnivore, which stalked prey in what’s now the western United States and Canada 76 million years in the past, went beneath the hammer at Sotheby’s in New York on Thursday.
The specimen being offered was found in 2018 within the Judith River Formation close to Havre, Montana, Sotheby’s stated.
It measures almost 10ft tall and 22ft lengthy.
All different identified Gorgosaurus skeletons are in museum collections, making this the one specimen accessible for personal possession, in keeping with the public sale home.

Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s world head of science and standard tradition, stated forward of the public sale: “In my career, I have had the privilege of handling and selling many exceptional and unique objects, but few have the capacity to inspire wonder and capture imaginations quite like this unbelievable Gorgosaurus skeleton.”
Sotheby’s presale estimate for the fossil was between $5m and $8m (£4.1m and £6.6m).
