Pakistan Predicts Lakhs of Afghan Refugees: After decades of war in Afghanistan, America is now out. Since then the power of Taliban is increasing and people have started turning to other countries. There is now a possibility of civil war in Afghanistan, due to which Pakistan may have to bear the most damage after Afghanistan. Pakistan expects about half a million new Afghan refugees to come to the country in the event of a civil war in neighboring Afghanistan. This information has been received from the news in the media here on Wednesday.
Taliban militants are rapidly gaining ground in war-torn Afghanistan. The Express Tribune reported that Pakistani officials say that this time the refugees will be kept in special camps in the border areas (How Many Afghan Refugees Are in Pakistan) instead of being allowed to go to the inhabited parts of the country. After the invasion of the former Soviet Union, Afghan refugees started coming to Pakistan. Pakistan is insisting on sending them back, but if Afghanistan is caught in a civil war, it may face new refugees.
Afghanistan heading towards civil war
Recently, in an information given to a select group of parliamentarians, Pakistani military officials had ruled out the possibility of peace in Afghanistan. The lawmakers were told that Afghanistan was rapidly heading towards a civil war, which is not good for Pakistan. Media reports said that the consequences of the unrest in Afghanistan include an increase in terrorism and a fresh influx of Afghan refugees (Afghanistan Refugees in Pakistan 2021). The newspaper quoted Pakistani officials as saying that the Taliban had gained a lot of momentum in recent weeks, but that the situation could change if Afghan security forces show some resistance.
Occupy one third of rural districts
In recent weeks the Taliban have captured nearly a third of Afghanistan’s rural districts and besieged several provincial capitals (Afghanistan Refugees in Pakistan News). A large number of members of Afghan security forces have fled to neighboring Tajikistan in the wake of the Taliban’s advance since the US evacuated its main Afghan base as part of a plan to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan by September 11.
