BeijingPartial lockdown has been imposed in Tianjin, China after cases of a new form of corona virus Omicron were reported. The area is experiencing its first local outbreak of this form of infection, but its numbers are currently low. These cases have come to the fore ahead of the start of the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing next month.
State broadcaster CCTV reported that the government imposed restrictions by dividing Tianjin and its 1.4 million population into three parts. Under this, in the first phase, people are not allowed to come out of the houses at all. Whereas in containment areas, one member of each family is allowed to go out of the house to buy ration etc. whereas in containment areas people will have to stay inside their areas.
Bus and train services from Tianjin to the capital Beijing have been suspended and people in the city have been asked not to leave the city unless there is urgent work. On Sunday, 20 children and adults were found infected with COVID-19 in the city, out of which at least two people were infected with the Omicron form of the virus. After this a massive investigation has been started in the city. On Sunday itself, 20 more people were found infected, after which the total number has reached 40.

Officials had earlier said that the virus was spreading and the number of cases could rise. China has adopted a zero-tolerance strategy for infection ahead of the Winter Olympics starting on February 4. At the same time, millions of people are locked in their homes in the cities of Xian and Yuzhou, located far away from Tianjin, because of the spread of the delta form of the virus there.
The residents of Shiyan have been facing a lockdown for more than two weeks. The city with a population of 1.3 crore reported only 15 cases of the virus on Monday, indicating that restrictions may be lifted soon. Yuzhou City is in Henan Province. On Monday, 60 more cases were found in Henan province, of which two were of Omicron form. These cases were found in Anyang city. More than a dozen cases of the Omicron form of the virus have been reported in China. Most of the people who returned from abroad have been found infected with this form and have been isolated.
