North Korea latest News: North Korea has come under tension due to the annual exercise between the US and South Korea to be held next month. North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un has called on his army to be ready for war. North Korea said on Friday that Kim Jong Un called for strengthening capabilities to deal with any foreign provocations during a meeting with military officials. Pyongyang sees this as an aggressive rehearsal.
Earlier this week, Kim Jong Un reopened closed communication channels with South Korea. This raised hopes of reducing hostilities on the Korean peninsula. But some experts say that Pyongyang may take missile tests or other tension-enhancing actions in response to the exercise. The practice has been changed by Seoul and Washington over the years to support diplomacy.
The first meeting after the establishment of the army
The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Kim organized a workshop of military commanders and political officials from July 24 to 27 to discuss ways to increase North Korea’s military might. It said it was the first such meeting since the establishment of North Korea’s military. KCNA reported that during the meeting, Kim Jong Un emphasized that commanders and political officials should focus efforts on completing preparedness to aggressively and proactively deal with any military provocation by enemies.
No mention of nuclear program
Kim Jong Un, in a clear reference to the US and South Korea, alleged that “hostile forces” are strengthening their capabilities to strike first and intensifying combat drills. Kim’s nuclear program was not mentioned in the speech given by KCNA. There was no mention of any fiery rhetoric against the US or South Korea.
