Fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi is trying new tricks to avoid being extradited to India. Choksi is working to instigate the Caribbean community through his lawyer. Mehul’s lawyer Michael Pollock told the Caribbean community on Monday that Choksi is a citizen of Antigua, so people should intervene in this matter. Pollock claimed that Choksi was called to a villa in Antigua and then beaten up. He was wheelchair bound and sent to Dominica by sea.
The lawyer also claimed that the incident with Mehul was in violation of Antigua law and was a big test for the Caribbean community. Pollock, a London-based lawyer, said Choksi’s kidnapping from Antigua to Dominica has drawn the world’s attention to the Caribbean. We have received very little information so far from the organization (Association Caribbean Countries) on this human rights violation. He said that a request has been made to meet the organization’s general secretary Irwin Larosk. Significantly, Choksi is accused of illegal entry into Dominica and has been hospitalized since May 30. Efforts are also going on at the government level to bring him to India.
Choksi arrested in Dominica on May 26
Mehul Choksi is wanted in India for defrauding Punjab National Bank (PNB) to the tune of about Rs 13,500 crore. He has been living as a citizen in Antigua and Barbuda since 2018 and mysteriously disappeared there on 23 May. After this, he was arrested on 26 May for illegally entering Dominica. Since then, the case is going on there against him. On the other hand, Choksi’s lawyers have been continuously claiming that the fugitive has been kidnapped and taken to Dominica, so that he can be extradited to India.
Action is being taken on Choksi according to the law
The government of Dominica had issued an order declaring Mehul Choksi as an illegal immigrant. Dominica’s Minister of National Security and Home Affairs Rayburn Blackmoor has issued an order to the police chief asking him to take legal action to expel Choksi from the country. On the other hand, it was reported that Scotland Yard of Britain is investigating this matter. But the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, clearly told the country’s parliament last week that he had not received any letter in this regard from the UK investigative agency.
