Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday feared that Iran could be hit by a new wave of the COVID-19 epidemic due to the outbreak of the delta variant. Rouhani told a meeting of Iran’s Anti-Virus Taskforce, ‘It is feared that we are heading towards a fifth wave across the country.’ He warned the public to be careful and said that the delta variant has spread in the southern provinces.
Iran is the worst affected by the Corona epidemic in the Middle East. According to official figures, COVID-19 has killed more than 84,000 people out of more than 3.2 million infections in the Islamic Republic. The health ministry has classified the capital Tehran and nine other cities in Tehran as ‘Red’, the highest category on the coronavirus risk scale.
Iran struggling for vaccination
The southern and southeastern provinces of Fars, Hormozgan, Kerman and Sistan-Baluchistan have also now been classified as ‘Red’ by the Ministry of Health. Iran says it is struggling to import vaccines for a population of 83 million, largely because of US sanctions that have made it difficult to transfer money to foreign firms.
The health ministry says just over 4.4 million people in Iran have received the first dose of the vaccine, while only 1.7 million have received the required two doses. Rouhani said that if God willing, the situation in the matter of vaccination will improve from next week. Authorities in Iran have approved the emergency use of two locally produced vaccines.
Nuclear power plant started in Iran
Power production resumed on Saturday after repairs were completed at Iran’s only nuclear power plant. The plant was shut down two weeks ago due to an emergency. This information has been given in a news of a government TV channel on Saturday.
Energy Ministry spokesman Mustafa Razabi Mashhadi was quoted in the news as saying that the work of power generation at the Bushehr plant has resumed. Mashhadi did not give details, but last week Iran’s nuclear department said engineers were working to repair the plant’s damaged generator.
