United NationsIndia’s top diplomat to the United Nations has said that the country has ensured the return of 22,500 Indians from war-torn Ukraine as well as helped 18 other countries to evacuate their citizens. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador TS Tirumurti expressed concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Ukraine and called for an “urgent need” to address the humanitarian needs of those affected.
Speaking at the UN Security Council briefing on Ukraine, Tirumurti said it is important that humanitarian measures are always guided by the principles of humanity, neutrality, fairness and independence. “These measures should not be politicised,” he said. Tirumurti also said, “India is deeply concerned over the current situation, which has been deteriorating steadily since the start of hostilities. Civilians have lost their lives because of the conflict. Thousands of people have been displaced internally and more than three million refugees have moved to neighboring countries. The humanitarian situation has worsened, especially where the fighting is going on.”

He said that India has ensured the safe return of about 22500 Indians from Ukraine. The Permanent Representative of India said, “We have also helped 18 other countries in this process (of evacuation). We commend the authorities of Ukraine and its neighboring countries for facilitating them in ensuring the safe return of people.”
Tirumurti said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for an immediate ceasefire and emphasized that there is no alternative but through dialogue and diplomacy. “We will continue to underline the need to respect the United Nations Charter, international law and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations,” he said.

The United States, Albania, Britain, France, Ireland and Norway requested a meeting of the UN Security Council on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine. Tirumurti said that India has sent more than 90 tonnes of supplies, including essential medicines and essential relief materials, to Ukraine and its neighbors since March 1. It is noteworthy that on 24 February, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the launch of a military operation against Ukraine.
