Potential names for a brand new Welsh main faculty have been rejected, partly as a result of they had been “difficult to pronounce”.
The new faculty will open in Monmouthshire in September 2024, the third Welsh-medium main faculty within the county.
The seedling faculty will present schooling to pupils as much as and together with 12 months one within the first occasion.
Councillor Tudor Thomas advised a full council assembly that the non permanent governing physique had checked out three names for the college.
Cllr Thomas stated the governors had chosen Ysgol Gymraeg Trefynwy (Monmouth Welsh School) as a result of it “[does] what it says on the tin”.
“The other names we looked at, which were more difficult to pronounce, and I think some people would have found difficulty with, were Ysgol Bro Mynwy, translated as Mono Vale School,” he stated.
“And then Ysgol Glannau Gwy, which is translated as Banks of the River Wye School, which, again, [is] quite difficult to pronounce.”
The councillor stated the chosen title, which was accredited by councillors on the assembly, was “short, sharp [and] says what it says”.
One councillor, Louise Brown, requested if the college’s title plate may embrace each Welsh and English “for the benefit of the public and residents so they know what the school is about”.
Cllr Thomas stated he would look into the suggestion, however emphasised it was a Welsh-medium faculty.

He added the brand new faculty was a “historic” growth for the county and stated he hoped in the future there would even be a Welsh-medium secondary faculty.
