A 14-year-old woman died in a fireplace at a block of flats in east London, police have mentioned, as a teenage boy is questioned on suspicion of homicide.
Emergency crews have been referred to as to the blaze in Tollgate Road in Beckton, Newham, on Thursday night.
The Metropolitan Police mentioned the hearth is being handled as arson.
The power mentioned a 14-year-old woman died and 5 different individuals on the tackle have been injured, though their accidents are usually not life-threatening and so they have since been discharged from hospital.
A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of homicide, the Met mentioned.
Chief Superintendent Simon Crick mentioned: “Incidents such as these send shockwaves through our communities and I don’t underestimate the impact this will have in the local area and beyond.
“Your officers will be on patrol in the immediate vicinity over the Easter Weekend, please talk to them if you have any concerns.”
Flowers have been positioned on the scene of the hearth on Friday morning, whereas two ladies have been seen hugging and crying as they positioned tributes on the pavement outdoors the block of flats.
Another group, together with two girls, a person and a woman, have been seen putting six bunches of flowers on the pavement subsequent to police tape.
A bit of the street remained closed off on Friday morning, with police forensic officers and firefighters on the scene.
The fireplace broke out within the block of flats reverse a Lidl grocery store round 5.30pm on Thursday.
The supervisor of the shop, Raza Nowsin, informed native information web site MyLondon that folks have been leaping out of the home windows to flee.
“People were running around everywhere,” the witness mentioned.
“They had a mattress there and they were trying to jump on it but some people didn’t get to the mattress.”
Another witness informed the location they noticed “a person jumping out of the second-floor window as [they were] trapped, a sight I never thought I would see”.
The mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz, mentioned she was “deeply saddened” by the incident.
She wrote on Twitter: “We are deeply saddened by the news that there has been one fatality already from the fire that broke out in flats in Beckton.
“Our deepest condolences to family members now in mourning.”
