At least eight civilians were killed in shelling on Saturday from government-controlled territory in Syria’s last rebel hideout. The war watchdog said that most of the dead were children. According to the White Helmets rescue service and Idlib’s health directorate, the shells fell on Subhi al-Assi’s house in the village of Iblin in the southern province of Idlib, killing him, his wife and children.
Al-Assi was an administrator at the local health centre. The shelling also affected the home of a volunteer of the White Helmets, also known as the Syria Civil Defense, in which two of her children were killed. Volunteer, Omar al-Omar and his wife were injured. Another child died and four other family members were injured in a nearby village, according to White Helmets.
Violence escalated in recent weeks
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights in Britain also reported shelling and casualties. Violence has escalated in recent weeks between government forces in the region and extremists in Idlib, the rebel’s last stronghold, after a ceasefire was agreed last year. The ceasefire agreement was signed between Turkey, which supports the Syrian opposition, and Russia, the main supporter of the Syrian government.
Rocket attack on US soldiers
On Monday, there was a rocket attack on American soldiers in eastern Syria, in which no casualties were reported. A day earlier, on Sunday, the US carried out airstrikes targeting “bases used by Iran-backed militia groups” near the border between Iraq and Syria.
Iraq’s military condemned the US attacks and militia groups called for revenge on the US. Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said that these militia groups were using these bases to launch unmanned attacks against US forces in Iraq. It was the second attack in the area by the administration led by US President Joe Biden.
