Pakistan Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood Mahmood Shafqat) has reiterated that as per the schedule announced by the respective boards, board examinations from class 9 to 12 will be conducted across the country. Speaking to reporters in Lahore on Saturday, Mahmood recalled that last year the exam was canceled and all the students had passed. However, this year all the ministers and stakeholders have decided that grading will not be done without examination.
Mahmood said that the A2 level examinations have been done and now the examinations of class 9, 10, 11, 12 will be conducted. He said, ‘I am asking the students to continue with their studies as the examinations will neither be postponed nor cancelled.’ He advised those students who were already preparing to continue their studies. He said that the students who had hoped that the exam would be cancelled, ‘it will not happen’.
Provincial governments will decide on holidays
He stressed that this is the unanimous decision of our provinces and stakeholders. The examinations will be held as per the schedule announced by the board. Advising the students not to believe in rumours, the education minister said that there are 29 educational boards in the country, each of which had released its schedule and the exams would be held on those dates only.
Regarding summer vacations, Mahmood said it was left to the provincial governments whether they would give holidays or not. “These are not normal situations and whatever decision the provinces take under these circumstances will be right,” he said. The minister said education has been “severely affected” due to the closure of schools.
Opening of schools is very important
He said that keeping in view the situation of coronavirus, schools should be kept open as much as possible. Mahmood said that what can be taught in the classrooms cannot be done anywhere else. A lot of syllabus has to be covered and many loopholes have to be overcome. So we have left this decision to the provinces and private schools.
The Education Minister has given this statement after hundreds of students protested in front of the Higher Education Commission in Islamabad and demanded cancellation of Secondary School Certificate examinations. The protesters raised slogans against the government and demanded cancellation of the examination. The students said that they were taught online during the pandemic and were not fully prepared, so the exam should be cancelled.
