The ruling Communist Party of China is celebrating its 100th anniversary on Thursday. On this occasion, the country’s President Xi Jinping said that China does not suppress other countries. Xi’s statement is in the context of America. The Chinese President warned, saying, if anyone suppresses China, their head will be crushed. During this, a crowd of about 70 thousand people gathered at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. During this time many people were not even wearing masks.
Xi Jinping gave a speech for about an hour. During this, he reiterated the role of the Communist Party in Modern China. The party has been at the center of the development story of the country and attempts to isolate it from the people have always failed, he said. “We will never allow anyone to threaten, harass and subjugate China,” he said. China has repeatedly accused the US of trying to curb its development. These comments are also being seen as a reference to Washington.
How has China prepared for this anniversary?
The Communist Party of China (CCP), founded in 1921, came to power 72 years ago after a long civil war. In that time, the country has undergone massive changes. But some of these milestones were conspicuously missing in the campaign this year. An art performance titled The Great Journey was staged at the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing on Monday. Where the artists put up extraordinary set-pieces detailing the history of the party and the country. But important events such as the Cultural Revolution purge, the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong were missing.
Since April, Chinese cinemas have been ordered to screen propaganda films, known as red films, at least twice a week. Meanwhile, 100 television dramas celebrating the anniversary are set to air throughout the year. A song titled 100% was also released. In this, the achievements of China have been praised. ‘Red tourism’ has also become popular. Travel companies like Ctrip have launched 100 unique routes for the people. Several places across the country are considered historically important to the party, including the city of Yan’an, a pre-revolutionary base. More number of tourists are reaching these cities.
Why is the anniversary of the CCP important?
Experts say the CCP is keen to make itself synonymous with China’s rapid development, with celebrations focusing on the party and the country’s intertwined history. Tom Rafferty of The Economist Intelligence Unit told the BBC: “The party’s 100 years are clearly a momentous moment for it and it has been carefully planned.” He said the official message has emphasized that the present time is much better than the post-1978 reform period and is the beginning of a “new era”.
