At least five women were killed when a residential building collapsed in the Egyptian city of Alexandria. This information has been given in the news which came in the government media on Saturday. Al-Ahram daily reported that a 70-year-old woman was also injured in the collapse of the five-storey building on Friday. Rescuers pulled out three survivors from the rubble, who were taken to the hospital.
The source told AFP news agency on condition of anonymity that the dilapidated building in the al-Attarin district collapsed on Friday. According to the Alexandria governor’s Facebook page, the renovation of the five-story building was ordered in 2018 and the authorities ordered the top floor of the building to be demolished.
There are many dilapidated buildings in the area
There are many buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries in Alexandria and Cairo. Some of these buildings were long occupied by middle class people and in others public institutions were run. Now most of these buildings are dilapidated. In Egypt in recent years, poor or careless maintenance and low enforcement of building standards have resulted in several fatal building collapses. Earlier, many people were buried under the rubble due to the collapse of a building in Miami, USA.
So far, no trace of 159 people buried under the rubble of the building has been found. So far four people have died in this accident. In the memory of those killed in the accident, people offered flowers and expressed their condolences. After the collapse of this 12-storey building, the relief and rescue team quickly started evacuating the people trapped under it. Large machines, small buckets, drones, microphones and hand-held debris are being searched for the trapped people.
Sounds coming from rubble in Miami
Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief Rad Jadallah said, “Whenever we hear a sound from within the rubble, we’re starting work on that.” He said, sometimes these voices are only of steel. But someone may be calling for help from under the rubble. Amidst strong winds, two big cranes have been deployed to clear the debris. These cranes are making way for rescue workers by removing pieces of metal. After this accident, people are in panic in the area.
