Government will appeal to raise funds for food
Castro said hundreds of adults and children are in dire straits due to starvation in Madagascar. Hundreds of children have become malnourished. She said that she has been working for WFP for 28 years but she has never seen such a bad situation. Castro said that in 1998 the situation was similar in Bahr al-Ghazal, which is now South Sudan.
To avert a major famine in the near future, the United Nations and the government of Madagascar will appeal to the international community to raise $155 million to provide food for the people there, Castro said. Thousands of people have left rural areas and moved to urban areas in search of food.
‘The worst is yet to come’
