In an Instagram update, NASA shared two images of an experimental aircraft called the scaled-down X-59 Quad Supersonic Technology (QueSST).
NASA said, ‘Quiet supersonic flight? we are working on it.’ This full-scale aircraft is being built by NASA and Lockheed Martin. NASA is also preparing to test the full-scale X-59 this year.
Regarding the images shared, NASA has said that the first image shows the model of the aircraft during the sonic boom test inside the wind tunnel. Its length is about one and a half feet. It was captured on camera by a photographic process called ‘Sliren’. This test took place at the Glenn Research Center in Ohio, USA.
John Wolter, lead researcher of the X-59 Sonic Boom Wind Tunnel Test, said, “The test shows that we have a quiet design of the aircraft and also have the right techniques to detect noise in these future aircraft. In March, this aircraft will travel to Japan. There the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Boeing will do further tests in it.
NASA is working on many projects. These include his moon mission Artemis 1 (Artemis 1). Recently its launch has been pushed forward by a month. The Artemis program aims to return astronauts to the lunar surface by the end of this decade.
