Shaktikanta Das said that till now most of the features of UPI are available on smartphones only. Because of this, people from the lower strata of the society, especially in rural areas, have not been able to access this popular service. He said that the UPI volume has so far reached Rs 76 lakh crore in FY 2022 as compared to Rs 41 lakh crore in 2021. Shaktikanta Das said that the day is not far when its total volume will reach Rs 100 lakh crore.
He said that there are about 400 million feature phone users in the country. Deputy Governor T Ravi Shankar said that currently UPI services are available to users through USSD-based services, but it is cumbersome and not all mobile operators offer this service.
Under the new technology, feature phone users will now be able to do multiple transactions based on four technology options. They will be able to make digital payments by calling IVR (Interactive Voice Response) numbers, through app functionality in feature phones, through missed calls and through proximity sound-based payments.
Feature phone users can also now make payments to their friends and family. Can pay bills. You can recharge your car’s fastag. You can also pay mobile bills. Account balance can also be tracked as well as UPI PIN can be set and changed.
Along with this, a 24×7 helpline has also been started for digital payments, which has been setup by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). This helpline named ‘DigiSathi’ will answer the queries of the users through the website and chatbot and help them in digital payments.
