The $10 billion (about Rs 75,330 crore) James Webb Space Telescope is the largest telescope ever built. Its purpose is to help astronomers make successful discoveries. It is designed to look deeper into the universe than Hubble and trace events up to 13.5 billion years ago.
At present, the Hubble Space Telescope is the most powerful telescope in space. For the past 30 years, it has given astronomers great information. After a long time, the need was felt to change it. Both NASA and ESA (European Space Agency) had a role in completing the Hubble project. Together they decided to build a bigger and more powerful telescope. The James Webb Telescope can also see in infrared, compared to Hubble. Scientists hope that the advanced capabilities of the James Webb Telescope can be used to study the atmosphere of distant planets.
In a blog post this week, NASA said that it would launch the mission on December 25. According to Indian time, this launch will happen at 5:50 pm. A BBC report said mission controllers are watching for strong winds blowing in the wrong direction to prevent debris from falling to the ground if the launch fails.
The James Webb Telescope will be deployed in space about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. The journey is expected to be completed in a month. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said that this is an extraordinary mission … it will give us a better understanding of our universe and our place in it.
