This incident of leaking photos shows a clear flaw in the tall claims made by Apple about tight control of its repair facility.
symbolic picture
Apple has paid a student millions of dollars in fines for posting nude photos and videos on social media using an iPhone used for repairs. The work was carried out by two repair technicians at an Apple repair facility in California, operated by Pegatron.
The serious privacy breach occurred in 2016 when a university student in Oregon sent his phone to Apple for repair. As the phone was being repaired, two technicians posted 10 pictures of the phone “several steps to undress and a sex video” on the student’s Facebook account. The post on Facebook was done in such a way that it seemed that the student himself had uploaded it. The photographs were removed after the student was informed of the post by her friends.
Hiding case details
According to legal filings seen by The Telegraph, the exact amount of the settlement has not been disclosed. However, it is described as a “multimillion-dollar” amount. As part of the settlement, a privacy provision was also agreed upon, preventing the individual from discussing the matter or disclosing the paid amount.
The privacy agreement was to avoid “emotional distress”, as Apple emphasized privacy throughout the settlement. For this reason, Apple was referred to simply as a “customer” throughout the proceedings. The tech major was recently named as a customer during a separate, unrelated lawsuit. Apple confirmed the incident to The Telegraph.
The privacy agreement hid many details of the incident. At the same time, after a detailed investigation by Apple, both the employees have been fired. Apple has also been slammed for disposal by Pegatron. Pegatron and its insurers, who refused to pay the bill, have now settled the matter privately.
This incident clearly shows a clear flaw in the tall claims made by Apple over and over again over the tight control of its repair facility. It seems that if such incidents can happen within the well monitored facility of the company.
