In a press release issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, it has been told that no approval will be required to import the components of the drone. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued a notification banning the import of drones. It said, “Import of drones as CBU (Completely Built Up) / CKD (Completely Knocked Down) / SKD (Senny Knocked Down) is prohibited. This includes imports for R&D, Defense and Security purposes. Import will be allowed.”
Organizations of the Central or State Governments or educational institutions recognized by them, Government recognized R&D institutions and drone manufacturers for the purpose of R&D will be allowed to import drones. However, this permission will be given by DGFT after consultation with the concerned ministries.
The Civil Aviation Ministry has said that the import of drones from abroad has been banned to promote the manufacturing of drones in the country. The ministry had relaxed the rules for drones last year. After this, the drone airspace map, PLI scheme and UTM policy framework were released by the ministry. The Drone Certification Scheme was also released last month. The use of drones has increased rapidly in recent years. Along with this, the import of drones has also increased. After the ban on import of drones, their manufacturing in the country is likely to increase and their prices will come down. The number of local companies making drones is less and with the ban on imports, business in this segment can grow rapidly.
