The cases of cyber attacks and data leaks are increasing continuously. Recently, after the news of password and data leak of 800 crore users in a cyber attack, now the news of another data leak has come to the fore. Cybercriminals have broken into games giant Electronic Arts (EA), stealing and selling 780GB of data. It also includes the game source code for FIFA 21, the Frostbite engine and other game development tools. As reported by Motherboard, EA, publisher of Battlefield, FIFA and The Sims, has confirmed the data breach.
“We are investigating a recent incident of intrusion into our network where a limited amount of game source code and related tools were stolen,” an Electronic Arts (EA) spokesperson told Motherboard in a statement. “No player’s data was accessed and we have no reason to believe that player privacy is at risk,” the spokesperson said.
The hackers, on the other hand, claimed on the Underground Web Hacking Forum that they have “the full potential to exploit all EA services.” The hackers said they had taken the source code for FIFA 21, as well as the code for its matchmaking server.
“Other stolen information includes proprietary EA frameworks and software development kits (SDKs), bundles of code that could make game development more streamlined,” the report said. Recently, hackers stole the source code of CD Projekt Red for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3.
Last year, Japanese video game company Nintendo admitted that more than 160,000 user accounts were compromised, where hackers took login IDs and passwords. Nintendo, which “sincerely apologizes” for the incident, said it was disabling the ability to log into a Nintendo account via a Nintendo Network ID (NNID) that became a gateway for hackers.
