It has been written in the letter that more than 1100 flights may have to be cancelled, diverted or delayed in a day. Due to this, about one lakh passengers will be affected. Late Monday, airlines were considering whether to start canceling some international flights arriving in the US on Wednesday.
The letter also bears signatures from UPS Airlines, Alaska Air, Atlas Air, JetBlue Airways and FedEx Express. It has been written that these steps are being taken immediately. The letter has also been sent to White House National Economic Council Director Brian Deez, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, FAA Administrator Steve Dixon and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Jessica Rosenworcel.
The group of companies that sent the letter declined to comment on the matter. There was no immediate comment from the government agencies either.
Significantly, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a warning. According to this, sensitive equipment of the airplane such as altimeters can be affected due to 5G. This can cause a lot of trouble in low-visibility operations.
AT&T and Verizon won almost all C-band spectrum in an auction last year for $80 billion (about Rs 5,95,040 crore). Both the companies had agreed to create buffer zones in around 50 airports on January 3 this year. The companies had also agreed to delay the launch of 5G service by two weeks. Now this time period has also ended, but the concerns of the airlines still remain.
Airlines are asking some major airports not to implement 5G within about 2 miles (3.2 km) of airport runways. Necessary steps are being demanded to be taken for this.
