Airtel is delivering its 5G network at a speed of more than 1Gbps during the trial. This is much faster than what customers generally get on 4G networks in the country.
5g In India
Bharti Airtel has started its 5G testing network in Gurugram in less than a month. On behalf of the government, telecom operators in India were allowed to test on the next generation cellular network technology. The telecom company is offering a maximum speed of more than 1Gbps in its 5G network. The site where the trial is going on is working in the 3500 MHz band.
Earlier this year, Airtel demonstrated its 5G network using spectrum in the 1800 MHz band. The 5G testing network is now live in the Cyber Hub of Gurugram. Airtel is running the testing in partnership with Swedish device maker Ericsson. After initial testing, Airtel is planning to run similar testing in Mumbai in the coming days. Airtel is delivering its 5G network at speeds above 1Gbps during the trial. This is much faster than what customers generally get on 4G networks in the country.
Let us tell you that India is ranked 130 in terms of mobile internet speed worldwide, with an average download speed of 12.81 Mbps and upload speed of 4.79 Mbps.
For now, Airtel customers will not be able to experience the 5G network during testing, even if they have a relevant smartphone, as government regulations do not allow testing with end users. The devices that operators use for such testing require a special software update from their developer to perform the testing prior to the public rollout of the network.
In May, the government allowed telecom operators including Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea to start 5G testing in the country along with device makers Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung. Airtel received 5G trial spectrum in the 3500 MHz, 28 GHz and 700 MHz bands in Delhi/NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru.
What is Jio doing in terms of 5G?
Unlike Airtel, Jio, which is the country’s largest telecom operator in terms of its user base, is yet to conduct its formal 5G testing in the country. The Mumbai-based operator last year promised to test 5G on a large scale in collaboration with Qualcomm. It is also working with Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung to enable its telecom gear for 5G networks in the country. In December, Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani revealed that Jio would start its 5G services in the second half of 2021.
