Dubai, Tennis player Novak Djokovic arrived in Dubai early on Monday after being deported from Australia following a controversy over the need for anti-Covid-19 vaccinations. Tennis’s top player’s hopes of retaining her Australian Open title have also been dashed by her refusal to accept the necessity of being vaccinated.
The plane carrying Djokovic reached here after completing a 13-and-a-half-hour journey from Melbourne. In Australia, he argued in a court that he should be allowed to stay in the country and play in tournaments under medical exemption that he had been infected with the corona virus only last month. It was not immediately clear where he would go from here. The ‘Dubai Duty Free Tennis Series’ will begin on February 14.

Vaccination is not mandatory for passengers in Dubai, the commercial capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), although they are required to show a PCR report confirming non-infection before boarding an aircraft. Djokovic’s visa was revoked on 6 January by a border official, who decided he did not qualify for the medical exemption from Australia’s rules for unvaccinated visitors.
He was exempted from the tournament’s vaccine rules because he had been infected within the past six months. Djokovic was allowed to remain in Australia for the tournament, but Australia’s immigration minister later revoked his visa. Three federal court judges on Sunday unanimously decided to uphold the immigration minister’s authority to revoke Djokovic’s visa.
