This is the first win for England to start the campaign after losing three consecutive matches in the league stage.
Mount Monganui, India captain Mithali Raj and senior pacer Jhulan Goswami on Wednesday said the top-order batsman did not perform as expected but expressed hope that the ongoing ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022) she will soon improve her performance.
Defending champions England bundled out India for just 134 runs on Wednesday and then registered a victory in 31.2 overs with four wickets remaining. This is the first win for England to start the campaign after losing three consecutive matches in the league stage. Mithali Raj said after the match, “Definitely we could not partner in the top order, we wanted to bat first. We thought of scoring 200 plus runs and if that was the case any team could have won this match.

Referring to the next match against Australia, he said, “We are doing well as a fielding unit in every match and hopefully we will continue that.” Batting is a matter of concern but in the next match we will try to sort it out, we have to play against a team that hasn’t lost to anybody so far.
Jhulan Goswami also agreed with Mithali in the post-match press conference. Jhulan said, “To be honest, yes at the moment our top order is not performing as we expected but I am sure we have to be positive about it because they have performed very well in the past. “
“She didn’t bat the way we were thinking, but I hope she does better in the next match,” she said. Despite the loss, India remain in third place with four points in the eight-team points table. India has won two out of four matches while losing two. England are sixth with two points from four matches.
Jhulan Goswami said, “It is the biggest platform, everyone wants to perform well and contribute for the team. I hope she will come back strong in the next match.” Regarding getting the 250th wicket in One Day International cricket, Jhulan said, “When I started I never thought about it. I just want to get out on the field and perform.” India will take on points table toppers Australia in their next match on March 19 in Auckland. (agency)
