Chicago White Sox supervisor Pedro Grifol requested Liam Hendriks how he was feeling after pitching the ninth inning Friday in opposition to the Miami Marlins.
Grifol stated Hendriks responded, “We’ll see tomorrow.”
“If you know Liam, he never says that,” Grifol stated Sunday. “He’s always available and he always wants to pitch. Once he said that, it was a little bit of a red flag.”
The Sox positioned the reliever on the 15-day injured listing Sunday with proper elbow irritation. The transfer is retroactive to Saturday.
Hendriks is 2-0 with one save, a 5.40 ERA and three strikeouts in 5 appearances since his inspirational return on May 29 after his battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
General supervisor Rick Hahn stated Hendriks is “likely dealing with something fairly similar symptomatically to what he dealt with last year.”
Last season, Hendriks went on the IL on June 11 with a flexor pressure in his proper forearm and returned July 4.
“At this point, we do not know if that’s going to be a similar path for this year,” Hahn stated. “He’s present process further examinations. He’s not on the ballpark (Sunday), seeing our docs. I believe we gained’t have a particular replace till most likely Tuesday, in all candor.
“It’s too early for me to tell you we are going to follow the same treatment and return to play as what we dealt with in ‘22.”
Hahn stated it’s “too early to put it on the flexor.”
“Last year the strain involved the ligament as well,” Hahn stated. “It’s only a matter of how does it current, how do you deal with it and the way do you get him again.
“The symptoms are very similar to what we had last year but not ready to say it’s a flexor strain until we can read an MRI.”
Hendriks’ return to the mound has been probably the greatest tales in baseball.
He publicly revealed his most cancers analysis on Jan. 8, accomplished therapy April 3 and introduced he was most cancers free April 20. Hendriks did some baseball work whereas present process therapy at spring coaching and commenced a rehab project with Triple-A Charlotte on May 5.
“At this point based on everything we know, I feel confident in saying that the ramp-up and the return-to-play protocol did not influence this result,” Hahn stated. “Has every part he’s been by way of, medically and bodily, over the previous six months, let’s say, probably led us right here? Maybe.
“But in terms of once he was cleared and how he was ramped up and how he returned to play, I don’t think that’s a factor, based upon the fact that the number of medical professionals involved ranging from our orthopedic people to his oncologist, to rehabilitation specialist, to the number of check-ins with where he was at physically along the way, this is perhaps the most thoroughly vetted return to play of any player in certainly my recent memory.”
Hendriks picked up his first win June 4, which was additionally National Cancer Survivors Day.
He saved the opener of the sequence in opposition to the New York Yankees on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium and was the profitable pitcher once more Friday.
“He was getting stronger,” Grifol stated. “Prior to (Friday’s) outing, he was 95-97 mph, he appeared actually good. And then he pitched right here (Friday) and didn’t actually look nice. But once more the mindset, the expertise, the texture for the job simply received him by way of that one.
“After that, it just turned out that he didn’t feel good. Here’s where we are. We’ll see what happens moving forward and what him and the doctors and the training staff decide to do.”
