Lucknow: Amidst the promises of various political parties to waive electricity bills ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, the Yogi government has played the stake on Nahle. Yogi government has given big relief to the farmers of the state regarding electricity bills. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced 50 percent rebate in electricity bills of farmers. It has been decided to give 50 percent concession in the electricity bills of farmers’ private tube wells over the current rate. This decision will benefit the farmers having more than 30 lakh private tube wells in the state. Earlier, the state government had also announced to increase the electricity supply of the villages.
It is worth noting that due to the assembly elections to be held in the coming days in Uttar Pradesh, big promises are being made by all the political parties regarding electricity. While the Samajwadi Party, Aam Aadmi Party have promised to provide 300 units of free electricity per month to all domestic consumers, the Congress has talked about providing 400 units of electricity free on the lines of Chhattisgarh. Almost all the opposition parties in the state have promised free electricity for irrigation to the farmers. Political parties have also promised to provide electricity to weavers in the state at old rates. The AAP, including the Congress, has also talked about waiving the electricity bills of the Koran period.

electricity rates will change
There will be a change in the electricity rates after getting the subsidy from the government. According to the proposed new rates, where bill has to be paid at the rate of two rupees per unit on metered connections in rural areas, now only one unit will have to be paid. The fixed charge for this connection will be Rs 35 per horsepower instead of Rs 70. Similarly, for unmetered connection, the fixed charge will be Rs 85 per horsepower instead of Rs 170 per horsepower. Whereas the energy efficient pump is currently charged at the rate of Rs 1.65 per unit, farmers will now have to pay only 83 paise per unit. On the other hand, instead of Rs 6 per unit for private tube wells with metered connection in urban areas, farmers will now have to pay only Rs 3 per unit.
Electricity rates not increased in last 2 years
While the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is questioning the claims of providing free electricity to domestic consumers, it has also joined this politics by announcing 50 per cent rebate in electricity bills for the farmers. Electricity rates have not been increased in Uttar Pradesh for the last two years due to the corona epidemic and now due to the approaching assembly elections. However, a proposal in this regard was filed before the State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
