BJP MLAs who had earlier tendered their resignations also joined the Samajwadi Party at the party office in the presence of SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. Apart from Swami Prasad Maurya, other ministers who went to the SP’s side were also Dharam Singh Saini.
Dara Singh Chauhan, a native of Azamgarh district of eastern Uttar Pradesh, was elected MLA from Madhuban assembly seat in Mau district in 2017 and became the Minister of Forest and Environment in Yogi’s government. Prior to this, Chouhan was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1996 on the ticket of Bahujan Samaj Party, but before the completion of his term, he joined the SP.
Again he was sent to the Rajya Sabha by the Samajwadi Party and till 2006, Chouhan was a member of the Rajya Sabha. Later he again returned to BSP and in 2009 was elected MP from Ghosi Lok Sabha constituency on a BSP ticket.
Chouhan was also the leader of the BSP Parliamentary Party in the Lok Sabha but in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he was defeated by Harinarayan Rajbhar of the Bharatiya Janata Party. After this, in the year 2015, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in Delhi and the BJP leadership made him the national president of the BJP Backward Classes Morcha.
