Odisha: Every year 15 January is celebrated as Army Day in India. On this day in 1949, KM Cariappa became the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. Since then 15 January is celebrated as Army Day. Indian Army will celebrate its 74th Army Day today.
The Indian Army was officially established on April 1, 1895. However, on 15 January 1949, the country got its first Chief of Indian Army. Since then this day is celebrated all over the country. Lieutenant General KM Cariappa took over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from the last British Commander-in-Chief, General Francis Butcher.

Actually, Army Day is a celebration of the independence of the army. At present, 11 lakh 30 thousand Indian soldiers are working in different positions in the Army, whereas in 1948 there were about two lakh soldiers in the army. Army Day is considered a holy occasion of inspiration to sacrifice one’s life for the country, as well as it is also a special occasion to be proud of the martyrdom of the brave warriors of the country.
