Actress and famous dancer Sudha Chandran has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide a special card to people with artificial limbs, explaining the difficulties she faces during security checks at the airport. The 56-year-old actress posted a video on her Instagram page on Thursday evening and said that whenever she travels by air, she is deeply hurt by the difficulties at the airport.
Chandran wrote that I am deeply hurt to go through this very painful investigation every time… Hope my message reaches the authorities of the State and Central Governments… and I look forward to taking immediate steps in this matter. The video appears to have been shot at the airport. In this, Chandran first introduced himself.
She said that I want to say this to our dear Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji on a very personal basis. This is my appeal to the central government and the state government. The actress said that my name is Sudha Chandran, I am an actress and dancer by profession, who has danced with a prosthesis and created history and made my country proud.
Chandran said he has requested airport authorities several times to test his prosthesis with an ETD (Explosive Detection Device), but every time they ask him to remove it.
She said in the video that whenever I go on professional trips, every time I am stopped at the airport. I request the security personnel, CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) officials to kindly do the ETD check of my prosthesis, even then they want me to remove my prosthesis and show them. Is it humanly possible Modi ji? Chandran said in the video that Modi ji, I request you to give us a card like senior citizens.
Scindia and CISF apologize
Sudha told Dainik Bhaskar that Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia apologized to her after sharing the video on social media. He said that as soon as my post went viral, I got a message from Scindia that he is sorry for this incident and is personally looking into this matter.
He told that apart from this, the DIG of Hyderabad has also assured me that I will not face any problem in future. There were also calls from Lucknow government. I hope that along with me, other physically disabled people can also be helped.
The CISF, which looks after the security at the airport, has also apologized to the actor. CISF tweeted that we are extremely sorry for the inconvenience caused to Sudha Chandran. As per protocol, prosthetics are to be removed for safety checks only under special circumstances.
He said that we will investigate why the women personnel concerned requested Sudha Chandran to remove the prosthetics. We assure Sudha Chandran that all our personnel will be re-sensitized on protocol so that there is no inconvenience to the traveling passengers.
Chandran lost a leg in 1981 at the age of 16. She was injured in an accident, after which doctors had to amputate her leg. Later, with the help of an artificial Jaipur foot, he started walking. She has since performed as a professional dancer as well as acting in films and television shows.
