Ranchi: A state level workshop was organized in the auditorium of Project Bhawan, Ranchi with the objective of accelerating the compliance of Forest Rights Act 2006 in the state of Jharkhand. Addressing the Additional Chief Secretary, Forest and Revenue Department, L. Khiangte said that forest dependent communities have a co-existence relationship with forests.
Forest Rights Act ensures these traditional rights of forest dependent communities. In Jharkhand, the process of giving rights to forest dependent communities under this law is going on. In terms of statistics, Jharkhand has individual and community forest leases from neighboring states of Chhattisgarh and Orissa. It is less, but the government is determined in this direction. In compliance with this law, there is a collective responsibility of many departments including Forest, Revenue, Welfare, Panchayati Raj and civil society and today’s workshop is an initiative towards motivating everyone.

On behalf of Jharkhand Forest Rights Forum, Father George Monipali presented the draft of the Standard Operating Procedure. Representatives from different districts including Forest, Revenue and Panchayati Raj Departments presented their views on this draft. Different committees discussed the activities to be taken after this and the challenges and issues related to the Forest Rights Act. The recommendations and suggestions of the committee were discussed by Welfare Secretary K. Of. Submitted to Sone. After finalizing the Standard Operating Procedure, a need was felt to comprehensively train all the stakeholders involved in compliance with this law. It was suggested to give the benefits of Raj’s schemes to the beneficiaries.
