Mumbai: The number of corporators in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation will increase to 236. The decision of the Mahavikas Aghadi government has been approved by the Mumbai High Court. The government had decided to increase the number of corporators from 227 to 236. Against which BJP corporators had filed a petition in the High Court. Which was rejected by the court.
The term of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation is ending in February after one and a half months. The government had taken the decision to increase the number of corporators in other municipal corporations of the state including Mumbai. The number of corporators in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation is currently 227. The decision to increase this number to 236 was taken in the cabinet meeting. Against which BJP corporator Rajeshree Shirwadkar and corporator Abhijit Samant had filed a petition in the High Court.

It was argued on behalf of the government that according to the 2011 census, the population of Mumbai had increased by 3.87 percent. Even after that the number of wards did not increase in the year 2017 elections but considering the increase in population of Mumbai in the last ten years it is necessary to increase the number of wards. The bill in this regard was approved in the winter session of the legislature. After the hearing, the court dismissed the petition of Shirwadkar and Samant.
no OBC reservation
The State Election Commission has told the court that reservation will not be given to OBCs in this election. Supreme Court’s decision regarding OBC reservation will be followed. The commission has also made it clear that this election will be conducted according to the 2011 census.
