Mumbai Drugs Case: Arbaaz Merchant, arrested on October 3 in connection with the seizure of drugs on a cruise ship by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), was released from Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai on Sunday. Merchant was released three days after getting bail from the Bombay High Court.
The High Court had on Thursday granted bail to Merchant along with Aryan Khan, son of Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and fashion model Munmun Dhamecha, arrested in the same case. Aryan Khan was released from Arthur Road Jail on Saturday, while Dhamecha walked out of Byculla Women’s Prison at around 11 am on Sunday.
Merchant was released later on Sunday after completing all legal formalities. Talking to reporters outside the jail, Merchant’s father Aslam Merchant said that the High Court has put strict conditions for bail. But being a lawyer, I assure that these conditions will be complied with. We would like to follow the rules and regulations… He will not do anything that goes against him.
Senior advocate Aslam Merchant, father of Aryan’s co-accused and friend Arbaaz Merchant, told ETimes in an interview that there was a delay in the paperwork in the sessions court and when the release memo was being typed, the entire court’s power was around 25 to 35 minutes. Was gone for a minute. Hence the order for Aryan’s release was delayed and could not reach the jail authorities till 5.30 pm.
In fact, on Friday, the copy of Aryan Khan’s release order could not reach Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai till 5:30 pm, due to which his release was postponed today. According to the rules, the copy of the release order has to be put in a box outside the jail at any cost by 5.30 pm. But despite millions of efforts, this could not happen on Friday.
According to Aslam, had all the bail papers been submitted by 5.35 pm, Aryan could have been released by 7 pm on Friday. Aryan, who has been in jail since October 3 in the Drugs Party case, has been granted bail by the court with several conditions. Aryans cannot leave the country without the permission of the Investigating Officer. Also, they have to submit their passport in the NDPS court and have to attend the NCB office every Friday.
Let us tell you that after Friday afternoon, a copy of the detailed order of the High Court was received on bail, in which 14 conditions were imposed for bail on Aryan Khan, Merchant and Dhamecha. Along with this, each was asked to furnish a personal bond of Rs one lakh each and one or two sureties of like amount.
