Parts of Green and Orange Line service will proceed to be suspended via the weekend, as crews work to shore up what the MBTA described as “severely deteriorated” help columns on the Government Center Garage.
The T mentioned it’s aiming to renew service — which was unexpectedly shut down Thursday evening — on Monday morning, if the storage is “deemed safe by internal and third-party engineers and safety experts.”
“The MBTA continues to provide assistance to the developer of the private Government Center Garage in the recovery effort, accommodating all efforts for the developer to have access to the support columns and to reinforce the structures,” the T mentioned in a press release.
“Repair work continues to be underway and the MBTA will continue to support HYM’s contractors by delivering workers and materials to the site.”
HYM Construction, the corporate demolishing a portion of the Government Center Garage as a part of its redevelopment, instructed the T that the storage’s help columns that go via MBTA tunnels have been severely deteriorated, which was creating an unsafe surroundings within the tunnel space for the Green and Orange Line trains to function via, in response to the MBTA.
While the MBTA has blamed the development firm’s demolition for the structural drawback within the storage, the developer, HYM Investment Group, mentioned the issue stemmed from years of water injury.
For the weekend, Orange Line service will stay suspended between Back Bay and North Station, and shuttle buses will substitute Green Line service between Lechmere and Government Center stations. The MBTA mentioned riders ought to use Green Line service between Copley and Government Center stations.
“Structural engineers and safety experts are also on scene monitoring the site, performing intensive examinations and assessments of the infrastructure above and below the surface at Haymarket,” the T mentioned. “Those teams are and will be ready to assess their work to ensure the safety of all infrastructure before allowing MBTA service to resume.”
