Aurangabad (Maharashtra): A Legislative Councilor (MLC) of Aurangabad has written a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, asking him to once again consider the decision to keep schools and colleges closed. The plea claimed that this has forced the boys to work in the fields, while the parents are getting the girls married at an early age.
The MLC, in a letter to the Chief Minister, urged him to reopen schools and colleges with 50 percent capacity. The Maharashtra government has announced the closure of schools in the state till February 15 following the rise in cases of COVID-19 and classes are being held online during this time. MLC of Marathwada Graduates’ Constituency and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Satish Chavan claimed that students’ studies were being affected due to the closure of schools and colleges.

Maharashtra is ruled by the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which also includes the NCP and Congress. Chavan claimed that due to the interruption in the academic session, boys have been forced to work in the fields, while parents are getting girls married at an early age. According to him, the writing, reading skills and knowledge acquisition skills of the students are also being negatively affected due to the closure of schools and colleges.
The MLC said that questions are being raised on how malls, hotels and cinema houses are open with 50 percent capacity in Maharashtra. Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope had said a day earlier that the demand for reopening of schools would be considered in 10-15 days, as the cases of children getting infected are less and the education of students is also being lost. He had said that the final decision would be taken by Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
