Iran has sentenced an Iranian-British woman to stay in jail for another year, which has already been in jail for five years. His lawyer has given information about this on Monday. Britain has criticized the punishment of Nazanin Zaghari Ratcliffe. Nazneen is already serving five years in prison in Iran.
His lawyer, Hojjat Karmani, told the news agency Associated Press that he had been sentenced to participate in a demonstration in front of the Iran Embassy in London in 2009 on charges of spreading ‘propaganda against the system’. Iran’s state media has not confirmed the immediate punishment. Her husband Richard Ratcliffe told the BBC that the court verdict was a poor sign and was “clearly a negotiation strategy” by Iranian authorities.
Negotiations on the nuclear deal in Vienna continue
Nazneen has been sentenced at a time when negotiations are going on between Iran and world powers over the nuclear deal in Vienna. The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has condemned Nazneen to be punished again. He said that it is not right that Nazneen be kept in jail for more time.
Johnson said that his government is making efforts to release Nazneen and is working closely with American friends on the issue. Nazneen was sentenced to five years in prison for conspiring to overthrow the Iranian government.
Did not get permission to return home
Last month, news came that Ratcliffe’s sentence in espionage jail for five years ended on the charges of espionage. Her lawyer had said though a new trial is going on and she cannot return home yet. The lawyer said that Nazneen Zaghari-Ratcliffe is under house arrest at her parents’ house in the capital of Tehran.
Diplomatic relations between Britain and Iran have become tense due to this long-running case and Iran has had to face international resentment. Britain’s Foreign Minister Dominic Raab last month welcomed the end of Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s sentence. He also asked Iran to allow Ratcliffe to return home.
