Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh is the most populous and fourth largest state of India. It is located in the north-central part of the country. Right now UP in particular is getting all our attention. Because it is preparing for the state election 2022. However, for the overall development of our country, understanding the history of UP is important to know the importance of this election and the contribution of Uttar Pradesh.
Uttar Pradesh Day is celebrated as the state’s foundation day. On January 24, the state government celebrates this day with great enthusiasm. On this day in 1950, the name of Uttar Pradesh was changed. Earlier the state was known as United Provinces.

As per records, the state was under the Bengal Presidency till 1834. The three presidencies were Bengal, Bombay and Madras and a need was felt to constitute a fourth Presidency which resulted in the formation of the fourth Presidency known as the Agra Presidency, headed by a Governor.
shifted from Agra to Allahabad
In January 1858, Lord Canning moved to Allahabad (now Prayagraj) and formed the North Western Province. Thus the seat of power was shifted from Agra to Allahabad. Consequently, the High Court was shifted from Agra to Allahabad in 1868.
Office shifted to Lucknow
The council was formed in Lucknow in 1921, after the first election to the Legislative Council in 1920. Because the governor, ministers and secretaries to the governors were to be in Lucknow, the then governor, Sir Harcourt Butler, shifted his headquarters from Allahabad to Lucknow. By 1935, the entire office was shifted to Lucknow.

Now, Lucknow became the capital of the province, which was further renamed to United Provinces in April 1937 and then to Uttar Pradesh, under the Constitution of India in January 1950.
Foundation Day proposed by Governor Ram Naik
5 years ago on May 2017, it was announced by the UP state government that 24 January would be celebrated as UP Day. This idea was proposed by the then Governor Ram Naik. After which in 2018, UP was celebrating its foundation day for the first time in 68 years of Indian independence.

This festival is sure to be filled with various grand functions and celebrations. When India got independence from the British Raj in 1947, it was still a country made up of different provinces. Gradually different small provinces came together to form states. And on 24 January 1950, the United Provinces was officially renamed as Uttar Pradesh and got statehood.
