Lahore motorway rape: The court has given a historic verdict in the rape case in Pakistan. The Anti-Terrorism Court of Lahore on Saturday pronounced Abid Malhi and Shafqat Ali guilty of rape along with a woman and sentenced them to death. Last year, both of them had brutalized the woman on the Lahore-Sialkot motorway. The court had reserved its decision on Thursday. This is the first time in Pakistan when the court has sentenced him to death in the gangrape case.
Arshad Hussain Bhatt, Judge of the Anti-Terrorism Court, gave this historic verdict on Saturday. According to Geo News, the case was heard in Lahore Camp Jail. The judge arrived in the jail at around five o’clock in the evening and after hearing for 25 minutes, gave his verdict. Both the convicts have also been sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of 50-50 thousand rupees. The verdict was delivered in the presence of a local magistrate.
More than 50 witnesses appeared
The convicts will be sent from Camp Jail to Kot Lakhpat Jail, where they will be sentenced to death. More than 50 witnesses appeared in this case, which took place about six and a half months ago. On the basis of his testimony, the court gave its verdict.
Help was sought after the petrol in the car ran out
On 9 September 2020, this road accident occurred in the middle of the road and filled the whole of Pakistan with anger. The woman was leaving with her children and her car’s petrol ran out on the Lahore-Sialkot motorway. He needed help, but Abid Malhi and Shafqat Ali made the woman a victim of their lust at gunpoint. That too in front of her children. Not only this, both of them also took away one lakh rupees, jewellery and ATM cards from the woman.
Protests across the country
After this incident, protests started all over Pakistan. People started demanding answers from the government as well. After this, a case was also registered under the Anti-Terrorism Act of Pakistan. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had expressed confidence to take ‘strict’ action on this incident. After this, the law was passed that the misdemeanours would be castrated. The draft of this law included things like increasing the role of women in police, hearing in fast track court of rape cases and protection of witnesses.
